Open Google and search for website development services in Lampung. The results: dozens of providers with prices ranging from Rp500 thousand to Rp50 million. All claim to be "professional." All promise "quality" results.
How do you tell them apart?
This guide isn't about selling our services. It's about giving you a concrete way of thinking, so that whatever you choose, you know what you're getting for your money.
Website Types: Which One Do You Need?
Not all websites are the same. An online store has different needs from a company profile, and both are different from a SaaS platform. Understanding which type of website you need is the first step, and it determines every decision after it.
Company Profile / Business Website
A website that presents your company profile, services, and contact information. Its main purpose: credibility and lead generation. When a potential client searches your business name on Google, they find a professional website instead of... nothing.
What matters: a convincing design, fast loading (under 3 seconds), solid basic SEO, mobile-friendly layout, and a clear conversion path (contact button, WhatsApp, or a form).
Cost: Rp 3–15 million. Timeline: 1–4 weeks.
Online Store / E-commerce
A website that enables direct transactions. Far more complex than a company profile because it needs: product management (hundreds or thousands of SKUs), shopping cart, payment gateway, real-time stock management, order dashboard, shipping integration, and automated emails.
Many businesses underestimate e-commerce complexity. This isn't a "website with a buy button." It is a transaction system that has to be reliable, secure, and fast.
Cost: Rp 10–50 million. Timeline: 4–8 weeks.
Web Application / Platform
A web-based application with custom functionality: analytics dashboards, management systems, customer portals, marketplace platforms, or internal tools. This is not a "website" in the traditional sense. It is software accessed through a browser.
It requires solid architecture, tight security, optimized performance, and a team experienced in building applications, not just static pages.
Cost: Rp 25–150 million+. Timeline: 2–6 months.
Landing Page
A single focused page for a marketing campaign or a specific product. Its goal: high conversion. Visitors arrive, read, and take action (sign up, buy, contact).
Cost: Rp 800 thousand–5 million. Timeline: 3–10 days.
The Technology They Use: Why It Matters
Ask which technology the provider uses. This isn't a pointless technical question. Technology determines your website's future: how fast, how secure, and how easy it is to develop.
Frontend: Modern vs Legacy
React, Next.js, Vue, and modern frameworks deliver superior performance and user experience. Websites built with modern technology load faster, are more interactive, and are easier to extend.
WordPress or static templates are still relevant for simple needs. But when you need to grow, adding features, integrations, or scale, their limitations start to show.
Hosting and Infrastructure
Cloudflare Pages, Vercel, Netlify, or traditional hosting (cPanel shared hosting)? This choice affects:
- Speed — global CDN vs a single server
- Security — DDoS protection, automatic SSL, firewalls
- Reliability — 99.9%+ uptime vs frequent downtime
- Scalability — can it handle traffic spikes or not
- Cost — pay-per-use vs monthly packages
A website hosted on modern infrastructure is usually faster and more secure, often at a lower cost.
Performance and SEO
A slow website doesn't just frustrate visitors. Google penalizes it too. Since 2021, Core Web Vitals has been a ranking factor. If your website is slow, you're not just losing impatient visitors, you're also losing your position on Google.
Technical indicators you can ask about (and should get clear answers to):
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how fast the main content appears. Target: under 2.5 seconds
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — how stable the layout is. Target: under 0.1
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how responsive interactions are. Target: under 200ms
- Mobile-first — design starts from mobile, not adapted from desktop
- Structured data — schema markup for rich snippets on Google
- Semantic HTML — code structure that search engines can read
A professional provider can explain their strategy for each point above. If they don't know what Core Web Vitals is, they can't optimize it.
Seven Questions to Ask
1. "Who will do the work?"
Is it an internal team, or outsourced to another freelancer? Is a senior engineer overseeing the project? How many other projects are they handling at the same time?
An experienced team makes a big difference in the quality of the result. A senior engineer supervising can prevent architecture mistakes that would only surface years later.
2. "What's the process?"
A professional provider has a clear process. Ask about the stages:
- Discovery — how do they gather requirements?
- Design — do you see mockups before development?
- Development — how is progress reported?
- Testing — who tests, and how?
- Launch — what happens at go-live?
- Post-launch — what support comes after release?
If the answer is "we just start building," that's a red flag.
3. "Do I have full access?"
This is a critical question. Make sure you have access to:
- Domain — registered in your name or your company's
- Hosting/server — you hold the admin credentials
- Source code — handed over at handover, not withheld
- Database — you can export it any time
- CMS — you can update content yourself
Some providers "tie up" clients by withholding access. That makes it hard to leave if you're unhappy, and dangerous if the provider goes out of business or stops responding.
4. "What happens after launch?"
A launched website needs:
- Security updates — patches for the CMS, plugins, and dependencies
- Automatic backups — daily or real-time
- Monitoring — uptime, performance, errors
- SSL renewal — automatic or manual?
- Content updates — who updates, and how?
Ask whether there is a maintenance package. How much it costs, and what's included.
5. "What's the total cost, including annual fees?"
Don't just ask about the build price. Ask about the annual costs:
| Component | Annual cost (estimate) |
|---|---|
| Domain | Rp 150–500 thousand/year |
| Hosting (shared) | Rp 500 thousand–3 million/year |
| Hosting (cloud/VPS) | Rp 2–15 million/year |
| SSL | Free (Let's Encrypt) or Rp 1–5 million/year |
| Maintenance | Rp 1–5 million/year |
Some providers offer a cheap build price but high annual costs (because hosting stays with them, with a markup). Calculate the total cost of ownership over 3 years.
6. "Is the website SEO-friendly?"
Ask specifically:
- Is the HTML semantic and structured?
- Is there schema markup (JSON-LD)?
- Is sitemap.xml generated automatically?
- Can meta tags be customized per page?
- Is there an internal linking strategy?
- Is it mobile-friendly?
If the answer is "yes, we'll do SEO later," it means they are not building SEO in from the start. SEO patched on afterward is always more expensive and less effective.
7. "Can it grow later?"
Your business grows. Your website should grow with it. Ask:
- Can we add new pages without coding?
- Can it integrate with other systems (CRM, ERP, payment)?
- Can features be upgraded (for example, from company profile to e-commerce)?
- Can it handle more traffic?
CMS: Who Will Update the Content?
A website that is never updated is a dead website. Make sure there is a CMS (Content Management System) that lets your team update content without always contacting the developer.
The CMS choice depends on your needs:
- WordPress — the most popular, easy to use, lots of plugins. But it needs regular security maintenance
- Headless CMS (Strapi, Sanity, Contentful) — flexible, high performance, a good fit for modern web apps
- Custom admin — built specifically for your needs, full control
Ask which option fits your team's ability. A CMS that's too complicated will be ignored. A CMS that's too simple will be limiting.
How Much Does Website Development Cost in Lampung?
Realistic ranges for the Indonesian market:
| Type | Initial cost | Annual cost | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landing page | Rp 800 thousand–5 million | Rp 500 thousand–2 million | 3–10 days |
| Company profile | Rp 3–15 million | Rp 1–3 million | 1–4 weeks |
| E-commerce | Rp 10–50 million | Rp 3–10 million | 4–8 weeks |
| Web application | Rp 25–150 million+ | Rp 5–20 million | 2–6 months |
Things to watch for:
- Too cheap (Rp 500 thousand for a "professional website") — usually a reused template, messy code, or no support
- High price without explanation — also no guarantee of quality. Ask what you're getting for that price
- Transparency is the key — a good provider explains what's included in the price and what isn't
Pitfalls That Happen All the Time
Reused Templates
Some providers use the same template for every client. Your website ends up looking exactly like 50 other businesses. That's fine if you don't care about differentiation. But if your brand matters, it hurts.
No Source Code
"You pay for the website, not the code." Heard that one? Some providers withhold the source code so clients can't leave. It's a practice that hurts clients. Make sure the source code is handed over at handover.
Locked-In Hosting
"Hosting has to stay with us." If a provider insists you host with them because "support is easier," watch out for excessive markups. You should be free to choose any host.
"Bonus" SEO
"3 months of free SEO!" Usually means: submitting to Google (which happens automatically), installing basic meta tags (which should be the default), and nothing else. Real SEO starts with the website's architecture, not patchwork afterward.
How to Get Started
Before contacting a provider, prepare:
- Website goals — what do you want to achieve? (credibility, sales, lead gen, information)
- Target visitors — who will visit? (demographics, location, devices)
- Required features — what must the website do? (contact, catalog, transactions, booking)
- References — which websites do you like, and why?
- Budget — what range are you prepared for?
- Timeline — when do you need the results?
With this information, a professional provider can give you a fitting proposal in one or two conversations.
